![]() At one point I met some mean-looking giants throwing rocks and I braced for a scrap, but rather than being challenged, I simply walked around them and moved on – they looked foreboding, but they might as well have been cardboard standees. There’s also precious little combat, and what’s there is can be easily avoided. She’s just hoofing it from point A to point B to collect a few things that open the path to the next boss.Īpart from being boring, these levels are annoying because the map doesn’t show the player’s position, and it’s easy to lose track of Thora’s current location. The levels in Jotun are a little convoluted so getting to the end isn’t as simple as walking in a straight line - one has Thora sliding on tree roots, another has her pushing from island to island on a raft, and so on - but they’re essentially empty. I get that the intended effect is to feel awed, but it just makes things hard to see.Īpart from the boss battles, Jotun doesn’t have much to offer because the other half of the experience is traversal, and traversal as a mechanic is not generally interesting. The game’s hand-drawn art style makes it tough to tell where hitboxes are, and worse, the camera zooms waaaaaay out at times to accentuate the size difference between Thora and her enemy. There’s also not much to the melee since she only has a weak hit, a strong hit (with an extremely long wind-up time) a dodge roll, and a handful of magic spells she picks up along the way.īesides feeling shallow, the encounters also suffer from poor readability. Thora’s attack speed is painfully slow, but it’s not the kind of slow that feels careful and deliberate, it’s just clunky. That said, actually fighting them isn’t good. Each one is much, much larger than she is, and taking down something on that scale is neat. ![]() Whenever Thora confronts one of the giants, it’s a spectacle. The first (and most impressive) are the boss battles. Unfortunately, it fares little better than the dry storytelling. While the developers found a wonderful voice actress to read the lines of their script (and I’m guessing it has some historical basis) I didn’t find it to be interesting or involving, so my focus fell to the gameplay. As to what the ultimate goal of these trials is, I’m not sure. I’m not familiar with Norse mythology so my grasp on the events here is a little shaky, but apparently these titans are being hunted down to impress the gods. In Jotun, the player takes the role of Thora, a female warrior chosen by the gods to kill a series of giants. As one might guess, this brings me to the subject of review, Jotun: Valhalla Edition, by Thunder Lotus Games. ![]() There are few things I enjoy less than giving a negative review to a small indie, but a not-good game is not-good game. WTF Why can’t I jump straight to the boss rush? LOW Traversal isn’t nearly as entertaining as the devs think it is. ![]()

![]() ![]() I’ll probably want at least one set for my HISS and I especially like the way they painted the red inside the skull of the Range Viper. They look like repaints of the officer, the infantry (with a vest from the Alpha Commando Snake Eyes) and the Range Viper in a HISS black and red scheme. These guys were illustrated on a mural on the wall right next to the Joe display, but the siren call of new plastic made me skip right by it. Looks cool.įinally there is the HISS Fire Team. She looks to be a mix of Akiko with Zaranna arms and Zartan mask and it totally works for me. I’m fine with the eye paint, but that seems to be a real sticking point online. I was hoping to see a more traditional web gear without the armor for a new Flint, but this one does look cooler with a different color than the shirt. The reaction to these seems fairly mixed online, but I dig them a lot. There were a couple new things in the Joe cabinet on preview night, including a Tiger Force Flint and Python Patrol Ninja. It looks amazing near the HISS and Wild Bill is shaping up to be a favorite figure. I thought I had a good gauge on the size, but it seems even larger in person and the height of the stand taller. It was so impressive to see the Dragonfly in person. I also love the accessories and the variety of things you can do with those and how the little tissue paper bag for them have a floral print. I so want them to do Tan Grunt and Clutch now too to match.Ĭhuckles was also fun to see in person and I think my initial impression that he’s kinda buff was right. I will always prefer new characters over repaints, but I love the way this thing looks! The different browns with that snazzy metallic orange visor is so damn pretty. Okay, maybe I’m lying because I find this desert repaint of Snake Eyes strangely compelling. There’s just so much damn good stuff in there I can’t pick a highlight. I was so stoked just to get an up close look at all the recent Joes. I think Robo got better pics at the breakfast presentation because the light was total crap in that particular cabinet. The new reveal on Thursday was Pre-Visla. Seeing Vader in person kind of bummed me out that I slept through his pre-order during Walmart Collector-Con. I’m really looking forward to R5 because the size looks good. I feel like that Jabba has a slightly better paint job than my SDCC version, but I don’t think I’ll replace it. The Bad Batch is looking snazzy in their new gear. Also of note, they are back to the plastic packaging with this wave of figures. I was super happy to see the Book of Boba Fett figures which look like they are coming along nicely. I don’t know the Iron Man and don’t particularly love the design, but I could go for a female Hydra soldier. The new Marvel figures shown on Thursday were a mixed bag for me. I love the way they have the Ben Mendelsohns posed here too. I believe these have been seen online before, but I was struck by the likenesses and cannot wait for Agatha and Yelena in particular. It feels a lot like Kevin Maguire’s artwork to me. I also really like the look of the deluxe figures together with the blast effects and the morphers. Her facial expressions and the printing is so good. There were a few shelves of Power Rangers figures and the one that jumped out to me most was this lovely Rita Repulsa. ![]() ![]() If your Pisces bestie is getting a little jelly, maybe try setting them up on a sweet blind date, or gently (ideally, over a biiiig glass of wine) telling them to stay in their lane.
